The Futaba FP-S10 is an older, discontinued servomotor that was primarily used as a sail winch drum servo in sailboats. It's difficult to pinpoint an exact discontinuation date, however, based on forum discussions and the general timeline of RC technology, it was discontinued likely in the late 1980s or early 1990s at the latest. It operated using standard electrical signals common to RC systems of its era, converting these signals into rotational movement.
Its construction involved internal gears that transmitted the motor's power to an output shaft, which would then connect to the sail lines. The large and sturdy design prioritized the steady and controlled pulling motion necessary for managing the strong forces exerted by sails on a model boat.
Since it operated on a continuous rotation, speed was measured functionally at approximately 21.8 inches of line pull per 3.8 seconds. Operating on standard 4.8V or 6.0V RC battery packs, the FP-S10 utilized a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal, with a typical center pulse of 1520 µs. While its unique spline was designed for Futaba drums, hobbyists have successfully adapted it to popular RMG drums, highlighting the versatility of this vintage model.
